On discovering the new technology of Colour Separation Overlay, Letts decided to use it to create the dinosaur in The Silurians. Only after completing the effect using an expensive and unwieldy full size outfit did he realise that by changing the scale a tad he could have used a tiny little puppet instead. And it wouldnt have looked any worse.
Letts pioneering work in this field later inspired George Lucas when filming Return of the Jedi. Hoping to recreate this awesome spectacle he filmed a full sized Rancor monster alongside a miniature Luke Skywalker. The creatures fuzzy blue outline was added at great expense to the finished scene after test screenings showed British audiences thought the effect looked fake without it.

On mastering the new technology of CSO, Letts proceeded to use it rather overzealously, in a frenzied and misguided attempt at cost-cutting. In Claws of Axos it was intended to provide the scenery behind a UNIT land-rover. Sadly someone forgot the vital second stage of electronically adding the required image, so the jeep appears to be racing along in front of a large blue cloth. In Terror of the Autons CSO stands in for everything - including Nicholas Courtney, who was on holiday at the time, and the word of in the storys title (representing a saving, according to contemporary documentation, of almost a guinea an episode).
